I’m Jan — a children’s author and creator of the Amazon bestselling Sukie Queen of Cats™series.

I write warm, reassuring stories that help families read together and help children feel they belong.

Sukie’s story began in real life.

She’s a rescue cat who quietly chose us — and now travels between mainland Scotland and Orkney. That sense of movement, of finding where you fit, became the heart of the books.

What started as one story has grown into a series that children connect with and families return to again and again.

Why I write

Before writing for children, my work focused on helping organisations and communities support people to learn, grow and thrive.

But everything I’ve seen points to one simple truth — confidence starts early.

When children feel safe, seen and connected, they learn more easily. And one of the simplest ways to build that is through shared reading.

That’s why I write.

What happend Now

Today, Sukie is being shared by families, teachers and schools across the UK and beyond.

Alongside the books, I’m developing simple, engaging story sessions for early years settings — bringing together storytelling, music and activities that help children feel confident and included.

Because every child deserves to feel they belong.

My background

Before writing for children, I spent many years working across local government, health and community services — always focused on supporting families and improving wellbeing.

I originally trained as an accountant (which still surprises me), before moving into work that felt more human. That led to a Master of Public Health and senior roles across the health sector, working closely with communities and professionals to understand what really helps people thrive.

I didn’t pursue qualifications for titles, but to understand people properly — how they think, feel and learn. That perspective shapes everything I write today.

Stories became the bridge between that work and something more personal.

Because when a child feels seen, safe and understood, everything else becomes easier — and that’s why I write.

What matters to me

I believe in kindness, belonging and the quiet courage found in everyday life.

I believe reading together creates connection — and those small moments matter more than we realise.

And I believe stories, even the gentle ones, can help children feel safe in a big world.

If Sukie brings a little warmth, confidence or calm to your family, then she’s doing exactly what she was meant to do.
