Not-Netflix Natters Series 2 Episode 7: Why Some Story Worlds Feel Alive

Children don’t just fall in love with characters.

They fall in love with worlds.

When a child asks to watch something again, they are asking to return to a place that feels familiar, surprising and worth revisiting.

I saw this with my grandchildren watching The Magic Faraway Tree. The story was delightful, but what stayed with us were the small, unexpected details that made the world feel alive.

The same is true of Bluey, The Creature Cases and Gabby's Dollhouse.

Each offers children somewhere they can enter, explore and revisit.

Some stories may look polished, but still feel manufactured.

Others feel inhabited.

And children know the difference.

When a world feels real, they bring it into their imagination and their play.

That is what keeps them coming back.

When a child says:

“Can we watch that again?”

They are really saying:

“Can we go back there?”
